How can we create equitable assessments that accurately measure student learning? This workshop explores how scaffolded summative assessments aligned with learning taxonomies can promote higher-order thinking, improve student performance, and enhance transparency in STEM education. Drawing on evidence from a sophomore-level undergraduate cell biology course, participants will examine strategies for preparing students for cognitively tiered assessments, evaluating performance reliably, and using assessment data to monitor learning. Findings show improved overall achievement and stronger performance on higher-order thinking questions, particularly among lower-performing students. Attendees will leave with practical, evidence-based approaches for designing transparent, equitable assessments that support student success.
