Microbiology education often emphasizes the pathogen while giving less attention to the host and environment components of the epidemiological triad. This workshop introduces strategies to help students explore how biology, public health, and social systems interact to influence disease outcomes. Participants will examine the relationships between microbiology, racism, stigma, and health inequities using the historical case study of epidemic typhus and the 1917 Bath Riots. Attendees will develop strategies for incorporating inclusive, trauma-informed approaches that support student engagement while addressing complex topics in microbiology classrooms.
