Traditional exams focus on lower-level Bloom's taxonomy (recall and understand), while authentic assessments tie learning to real-world contexts, invite student choice, and reveal how students think. These assessments are also more engaging, meaningful, and (mostly) resistant to answer-sharing and generative AI. This mini-workshop introduces portfolio-based authentic assessment as a practical alternative. This approach was implemented over three semesters in a large pre-health microbiology lecture course, and qualitative data from student feedback will be shared, along with strategies for scaffolding and managing student AI use. Attendees should bring a current assessment they want to reimagine as an authentic task or portfolio.
