Typical vaccine education focuses on the biology and science of vaccines, while the conversations our students will face after college are often shaped by emotion, lived-experience, and trust. In this mini-workshop, participants will first become the students as they experience first-hand a discussion that involves historical, cultural, and social aspects of vaccine hesitancy. Participants will then evaluate the pedagogy of this teaching approach and consider ways to implement interdisciplinary discussion into their courses. Finally, an example of a broadened vaccine curriculum will be presented along with evidence from biology education research of its effectiveness in building understanding that fosters empathy.
