Title: Exams and Caring: Assessment principles and practices that can push students farther and deepen the student-teacher relationship Abstract: Assessments have the potential to drive students away from their goals, or to create challenges that creatively motivate them to persist and thrive. While scientific and compassionate teaching practices in higher education are improving, the ways in which we write, give and support exams are predominantly based in traditional practices. To what extent is an exam a moral document? How can we change our assessments to give students the rigorous, caring education that is likely to propel them into science careers? This talk is appropriate for anyone who isn’t satisfied with the experience, for themself or their students, of the ways that they understand what their students can do. Assessing in ways that drive great study behavior is possible! Our goal is to provide the evidence that teachers of any kind need to decide if exam preview methods are a good fit for their students and their topics. Participants will analyze research data from classrooms across the United States, and consider how these intersect with best practices in teaching.
